Corona School, Apapa Alumni has commemorated its 60th alma mater 60th anniversary in colours.
The event which offers alumni opportunities to recount how they have benefit from the school ideology had in attendance notable Nigerians from different work of life. Speaking at the occasion which took place in Lagos, an Alumni & Deputy Managing Director of First Bank, Gbenga Sobo said that, times and culture had changed over the years, but the school did not change from its mission.
He said Corona School, Apapa remain committed to the ideal of inculcating the right principles and mindset into its pupils right from tender age in other to prepare them for the future ahead. “We are all beneficiaries of the sound teaching inculcated in us by our teachers in Corona. We are happy and thankful to God that this school has produced eminent personalities in our society and beyond.”
Wife of Nigeria’s Vice President, Dolapo Osinbajo who graduated from the school in 1978 recalled her fun memories of the school in her special address.
“School was fun! Although, we had a handful that did not warm up to Corona on their first day. Some of us started out as reluctant lovers. This is peculiar to those who were leaving home for the first time and had the first shock of their early years as they to put up with many faces on the first day of school.” Mrs. Osinbajo who delivered her address through Skype expressed her happiness for being part of the school’s 60thanniversary, adding that Corona School, Apapa, had inculcated sound values during her formative years, a value that has continually helped in defining who she is today.
Also one of the Alumni, Jimi Agbaje, an astute politician and community pharmacist in his goodwill message said Corona Apapa since inception, has been a melting pot of difference races.
Agbaje, who graduated from the school in 1967, recalls having students from as far as Italy, India, Bangladesh, Germany, Australia, Sri Lanka and many other countries whose first contact with English was in Corona Apapa. Chairman of the Corona Apapa @60 Planning Committee, Mrs. Bukola Gbadamosi said that the journey which began in then Corona Nursery School, at about age 3, has truly come full circle and has left indelible marks on her. Mrs. Gbadamosi, who graduated from the school in 1977 said pupils of the school are paragons of lasting friendship.
“Despite the many years that have passed since we graduated from Corona, despite the many different lives we have settled into in countries and continents around the world, we have managed to preserve the purity of friendships we first made as innocent boys and girls running around on the field and corridors of Corona Apapa. Current Head of the School, Grace Omoh Egbekuse, expressed joy for being part of the school’s 60thanniversary, reiterating her commitment to making the environment more amiable for the growth and motivation of the students.
As an institution we recount what we stand for; we rejoice on the occasion of this 60th anniversary, celebrating sixty years of developing the total child. Our specific objective for celebrating this milestone is to tell our amazing story, to celebrate our achievements and refresh for the next leap into the future.”
